Dawn Lowe - Cake Artist and owner of Sweet and Lowe Cake Design
Welcome to Sweet and Lowe Cake Design. I'm Dawn, Lisburn based, self-proclaimed perfectionist, solopreneur, lover of all things cake, and full-time mummy of 3. I was born and raised in The Bahamas but settled in Northern Ireland in 2015 where a passion to create edible art was discovered. I have always been somewhat artistic, and also, I love to feed people…so what better way to combine the two? In late 2021, I officially made the transition from hobby baker to full time cake artist and Sweet and Lowe Cake Design was born.
My professional background was the furthest thing from cake you could ever imagine. When I left school I worked in office admin, then in a locksmiths, and then decided I wanted to train as a mechanic. I did just that at a small family run auto repair shop. I raced cars and rode motor bikes in my spare time. I went on to work at a Toyota dealership serving in both the mechanic shop and parts sales department at different times. I very rarely, if ever baked, and certainly had never attempted decorating a cake!
After moving to Northern Ireland financial hardship forced my hand at an attempt to create my now 8 year olds 1st birthday cake. I made what I thought was the cutest little pink rosette cake and was so proud of myself! Then of course to make it “fair” my other two kids wanted their birthday cakes made as well. Friends and family starting asking me to make their cakes and I would always be the person showing up to an event, bake sale or party with a cake…any excuse to practice a new flavour, or technique I had been wanting to learn. I taught myself over the next 6 years while I toyed with the idea of starting a business, it just never seemed like the right time. But creating something "too amazing to cut" as most people say, lights me up and I came to a point where, as a single mum, I needed the flexibility of working from home during unconventional hours. I also knew deep down, if I didn’t go all in I would regret it. And that’s how I stumbled into this dream job of mine. I started Sweet and Lowe Cake Design in 2021 really only offering celebration cakes, but now in 2023 I have opened up my diary to the wedding cakes in Northern Ireland and I am so excited to expand and continue creating lasting memories through edible creations!
